The screenplay is smart and adult and doesn't pander. From Molly Parker, as the concerned mother just trying to do the right thing, to Maya struggling to get through to the guy she cares for, to Adam, who feels like he has the whole world on his shoulders, there is not a false note in the bunch. And while it's certainly beautiful to watch, it wouldn't be as affecting if it wasn't for the performances. So not only does he need to learn to accept the hand that was dealt to him, he needs to allow others to accept it as well.ĭirected by TV and film veteran Thor Fruedenthal, "Words" is a visually arresting film with a killer soundtrack by The Chainsmokers (and Andrew Hollander) and gorgeous cinematography by Michael Goi. The pair bonds and eventually starts to have feelings for each other.īut Charlie never tells Maya about his disease, and as things get more confused and he negligently goes off his medication, he puts everyone around him in danger - mostly himself. It gets even better when he meets Maya (Taylor Russell "Waves"), a forthright girl who takes a liking to him because he seems to be a weirdo like herself.
He begins to manage his disease, and life starts to be okay. When Charlie is deemed too dangerous to stay in public school, his mother enrolls him in a private school on the condition he continues to take an experimental drug that seems to be helping him. Living with his single mom (Molly Parker), Adam seems to be doing okay until he has a frightening episode during a chemistry class and accidentally injures another student.Īfter a battery of tests, the doctors inform him and his mother that Charlie has schizophrenia, a chronic mental condition that makes him see and hear things that aren't there. Having always been a bit different, cooking calms and focuses him. Like Netlix's "All the Bright Places," which covers depression, and the upcoming "Chemical Hearts" on Amazon Prime, which also deals with depression via tragedy (both also based on books), "Words on Bathrooms Walls" distinguishes itself with a crackling screenplay, two terrific lead performances, and a subject matter that is rarely examined with this much compassion and care.Ĭharlie Plummer ("Lean on Pete") stars as Adam, a shy, gawky kid with a love of cooking. Based on the Julia Walton novel, "Words on Bathroom Walls" is another 2020 offering that can be added to the "Young Adult Romance via Trauma" genre.
